Inside the Mind: Psychology 1
Why do people behave the way they do? What drives human emotion, motivation, or even conflict? Welcome to Inside the Mind: Psychology 1, an engaging, high school-level course designed to introduce students to the fascinating world of human behavior and mental processes.
In this foundational psychology class, students will explore the science behind thoughts, feelings, and actions. They’ll learn how psychologists observe, interpret, and explain behavior, using real-world applications that help them better understand themselves and those around them. With a balance of academic theory and everyday relevance, this course makes psychology both accessible and compelling.
Course Overview
Inside the Mind: Psychology 1 begins with the history of psychology—how the study of the mind evolved from philosophical inquiry into a scientific discipline. Students will learn about the early pioneers like Freud, Pavlov, and Skinner, and how their ideas still shape modern approaches today.
As the course progresses, students will be introduced to major fields of psychological study including:
Biological Psychology: How the brain and nervous system influence behavior.
Cognitive Psychology: How people perceive, think, remember, and learn.
Developmental Psychology: How humans grow and change over a lifetime.
Social Psychology: How group dynamics and social influences affect individual behavior.
Abnormal Psychology: What happens when mental processes break down, and how disorders are diagnosed and treated.
By the end of the course, students will be able to recognize psychological principles in everyday life—from understanding stress and coping skills, to identifying how advertising influences decision-making.
Interactive and Student-Focused
This course isn’t just about reading textbooks. Inside the Mind: Psychology 1 is designed to keep students engaged through a variety of interactive activities. These include experiments they can conduct at home, journal reflections, video case studies, and short creative projects. Through these tasks, students will begin to see psychology not as an abstract science, but as a meaningful lens through which to view real human experiences.
Each unit is grounded in key vocabulary and essential questions, helping students think critically about the material. Frequent check-ins and assessments reinforce understanding, while optional enrichment paths allow curious learners to go deeper into specific topics of interest, like dream analysis or psychological ethics.
Skills and College Readiness
In addition to exploring the workings of the human mind, this course helps students build valuable academic skills. They will learn how to:
Think analytically and evaluate evidence
Make connections across social and scientific domain
Write clearly and argue from evidence
Respect diverse perspectives and mental health frameworks
Whether students are considering a future in psychology, social work, education, law enforcement, or medicine—or simply want to understand themselves better—this course lays a strong foundation.
