French 1: Discovering French Language and Culture introduces
students to the essential building blocks of the French language and lays the
groundwork for effective communication and cultural appreciation. This semester
is designed for high school students beginning their journey with French, offering
a comprehensive and supportive approach to language learning. Through
meaningful activities, interactive lessons, and real-world application,
students gradually acquire the skills needed to speak, read, write, and
understand basic French.
The semester begins with a focus on pronunciation and basic
communication. Students explore the French alphabet, numbers, greetings, and
classroom phrases. They learn how to introduce themselves, ask and answer
simple questions, and talk about familiar subjects like school, family, and
daily activities. Grammar instruction is woven into each unit, covering
foundational concepts such as gender and number agreement, present-tense verb
conjugations, and the use of articles and adjectives.
A unique strength of French 1 is its emphasis on real-life
application. Students engage in conversations, role-plays, games, and short
writing exercises that reinforce vocabulary and grammar. The course also
incorporates cultural exploration—students gain insights into daily life,
education, traditions, and geography of French-speaking countries. By
connecting language to culture, students begin to understand how communication
reflects identity, values, and customs around the world.
