Art 11 is an intermediate visual arts course that builds on the foundational skills learned in Art 10. This course focuses on deepening students’ artistic techniques, expanding their creative voice, and fostering critical engagement with historical and contemporary art. Students will work in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional media, including advanced drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and digital art.
Art is more than just technique—it’s communication, identity, and voice. In Art 11, students step into the role of artist-as-author. This course challenges them to create work that not only looks good, but says something meaningful. Whether it's personal, political, cultural, or abstract, every project in Art 11 is designed to strengthen both artistic skill and visual storytelling.
Targeted to juniors and advanced visual art students, Art 11 builds on the foundations laid in Art 9 and Art 10. Students in this course are expected to work with greater independence, make bold creative choices, and develop a cohesive visual language. If Art 9 focused on technique and Art 10 explored voice, Art 11 is where message and mastery come together.
Throughout the semester, students experiment with mixed media, digital platforms, installation concepts, and advanced drawing and painting techniques. Projects may include:
A self-portrait series that explores identity
A visual narrative around a social justice issue
An abstract piece inspired by sound or emotion
A digital collage integrating historical and modern themes
A three-dimensional work addressing environmental concerns
Art 11 students explore contemporary and global art movements, investigating how artists use visual media to respond to the world around them. From Dada to digital activism, from street art to gallery installations, students are encouraged to analyze and draw inspiration from a wide range of genres and creators.
Each project begins with a concept pitch: What are you trying to say? Why does it matter? Who is your audience? This approach encourages deeper reflection and gives students the opportunity to integrate research, cultural references, and personal experiences into their work. As part of the process, students engage in formal critique, peer review, and revision cycles—skills that mirror the practices of working artists and designers.
Student agency is central in Art 11. Learners plan their own creative direction within each project prompt and are given more flexibility to pursue independent themes and personal styles. The course emphasizes artistic maturity, time management, and portfolio preparation.
Because LightStars Academy is a trauma-informed, student-centered learning space, students receive personalized feedback and emotional support throughout their journey. Weekly check-ins, discussion boards, and optional live studio sessions help foster connection, collaboration, and growth.
